Final Music Video: In My Heart- Aida

FINISHED

Today we had a discussion with our teacher who feels that our music video is very good as it is. I did feel that the middle was a little repetitive, but we feel that the instrumental and the ending more than make up for that. So we have now downloaded our music video and have given it to our teacher.

I also started to make a mock digipak, I had to stop as the images I used were taken for the actual video and therefore weren't of very good quality. So I have asked Paul to go out with Hayley and take some pictures on a digital camera.

17/12/2010

My plan for Friday is to have a quick discussion with the group to discuss some of the feedback we received from the rough cut of our music video.

Digipak Images

After some discussion between Lousie, Paul and myself we have decided that one image we will use for our digipak is a picture of Hayley playing the guitar.
After some experimenting I managed to find a few effects that would work well for the digipak.

We are still deciding on what other pictures of Hayley we are going to use and where they'll go.

Digipak Ideas

Below are some images that we may use for our digipak. The first three images were taken from our actual music video and then opened in Photoshop, where I applied an Ink Outlines, Glowing Edges and Photocopy filter on them. The photo's below these are of the band Aida.

MUSIC VIDEO DEADLINE!!

Wednesday, 8 December 2010

8/12/2010

I am still in the middle of editing the footage of our music video. In this lesson I have managed to get the the first verse and chorus and the instrumental and ending completely edited.

Friday, 3 December 2010

03/12/10

I came in for another lesson to find that the teacher wasn't in so I came down to the editing suite to work on our music video.
I think that we are doing well so far, but I think that we still need to go out and get some more footage of Hayley either lip synching or some random shots to put into the instrumental.

Aida Research

This is Jenn's Reverbnation site, where you can find information about herself, fans artist recommendations as well as some of her own songs.
After some further research I discovered that the band had not been together for a while, and that Jenn had married and had changed her last name from Falk to Krahn.

Weather

This week it has been snowing on and off, there for we are unable to film. I am still hoping that we will be able to film in the snow once it has stopped snowing and once we make sure that it is safe.

Filming Day Two: 30/11/10

Hayley took the camera and a tripod home to film some more footage of her lip synching, the next day she came in during her free time to upload the footage from the camera to our group computer.

Artists Recommendations

During my research on Aida I found some artists that Jenn was a fan of, these people also have Reverbnation sites.
Reverbnation is a site that allows musicians to promote themselves and their music.

Plan For The Week

My plan for the week is pretty short and simple, to edit as much of the footage on the iMac as I can. This will also allow me to see if we will need to go out and film some more footage, while doing this I will also keep trying to regularly update my blog.

Mood Board

This is the mood board was created by myself using photoshop and various different images. The images that I used represent the more commonly used words that can be found in our song lyrics, you can see the more commonly used words within the song in the wordle posted a few days ago.

Research on Digipaks

A digipak is a style of compact disc of DVD packaging, which typically consists of a gatefold paperboard or card stock outer binding with one or more plastic trays capable of holding a CD or DVD. Digipak style cases became more popular among record labels and recording artists in 2000, the packaging is often used for CD singles and special edition of CD albums.

Filming: Day One 12/11/2010

The day before we did some more filming, Hayley and Paul took the camera out over to Central Park to take some more shots to be used within our music video. The next day Hayley, Paul and I went to Hayley's house to film Hayley lip syncing to the song and some other shots, and with the footage that we have so far I am going to make a rough copy of the music video.

We also had Paul bring his digital camera to allow us to take pictures of what we were doing, these will be taken and made into a slideshow which we will pot onto our blogs.

This will allow us to show our peers and teachers and get some feedback on how we can make the video even better.

Monday 18th October, 2010 cont.

After the lesson had finished, I went home with the original plan and began making the amendments. I left some of the original ideas in and added some of the newer ideas that we discussed during the lesson. When I finished writing up the changes I sent a message to Paul on facebook.
I also sent an email of the plan to Louise.

Monday 18th October, 2010

Today we really began planning our music video and getting our ideas sorted. Earlier in the day there was a powercut and the internet still hadn't come back on by the time we went to our media lesson. To help us with our planning I volunteered to go home and get my laptop so that we could listen to the song that we are using for our music video.

Below you can see some pictures that Louise took on her phone.

This is what our original plan looked like, but after some deliberation we decided that there was too much going on and not enough time to get it.

We had to reduce the amount of information and make it simplier.

This image shows Paul, Lousie and myself discussing what ideas would fit in best where.

In this picture you can see me listening to the song, while Paul and Lousie where discussing things such as mise-en-scene, cinematography and our original ideas.

In this picture you can see the laptop with the song that we were listening to highlighted, you can also see alot of paper around us as we tried to figure out what we were going to use and what we weren't.

Animatic

Before we began filming we had to create an animatic of our storyboard. The storyboard is made up of images from each scene in the music video. Once all the pictures had been drawn, we had to take pictures of them using a digital camera which we then uploaded to the computer. Using these pictures we made the animatic using the editing software Final Cut Express, we then uploaded the video to youtube.

Initial Ideas- In My Heart

Planning for our music video began when we were given permission to use Aida's song, and below you can see the initial ideas we came up with.

Cinematography

We intend to use a number of different shot's including the following:
  • Close-up
  • Over the shoulder
  • Mid-shot
  • Side shot's
  • Handheld
We have already began to think about the editing, and what types of cuts and transitions we want including the following:

  • Straight cuts
  • Dissolve
  • Blackout
  • Fade out
  • Black and White (to show the bad things that happened in the past)
  • Sepia (to show the good things that happened in the past)

Mise-en-Scene

  • Drama Studio at All Saints, we will use this to film Hayley playing the piano while singing the song.

A bedroom and a few street locations. For the props we will need a piano, a car and a photo frame and when it comes to the costume we will have a range of different costumes to help reflect the mood of the song and for the make-up we will have mascara, blood and foundation.

Actor and Actress

For our music video we are going to be using Hayley as our singer and her friend Chris will play her boyfriend in the video.

"In My Heart" Lyrics

Don't you fall baby, dont you cry
but if you do, I'll be here to dry your tears.
They say that love it never dies.
Beyond the hurt, and beyond the lies.

And love will always be in my heart,
and I will never leave you in the dark.

Hold me close and hold me tight,
and maybe we can pretend that its all alright.
Love has never been so hard, but I won't
give up without a fight.

And love will always be in my heart,
and I will never leave you in the dark,
Oh in the dark.
And love will always be in my heart,
and I will never leave you in the dark,
Oh in the dark.

(Instrumental)

And love will always be in my
heart.

Aida Profile

Aida is a family band coming out of Vancouver B.C. made up of Jenn Falk who is the bands vocalist and pianist, Jamie Falk who is the bands drummer and Jared Falk who is the bands bassist.

Jenn writes all the lyrics from real life experiences giving the songs a soulful and heartfelt mentality you are sure to recognize, with a blend of pop, rock and jazz

Aida just released their first full length album called "Pirates and Gypsies".

Asking Permission 2

Due to the problem that occurred today I sent out emails to 3-4 other artists we were interested in, when we had our group meeting we had Hayley listen to each song. We all agreed on which one of the 3-4 artist whom we found on http://www.unsigned.com/.

We have decided to use the song In My Heart by the Aidaband, below you can see a print screen of the email I sent to the lead singer Jenn Falk.

A few hours later we received a reply giving us the permission to use the band's song. You can see a print screen of the reply below, within the email she also attached a copy of the song.

Problem

Today on October 13'th 2010, a problem occurred for our group. Our artist Wendy has not been responding to our emails regarding the song lyrics and a copy of the music for our coursework. Due to this problem today I have emailed 3-4 other artists that we are interested in and we are waiting for one of the artists to email us back.

This problem means that we are falling behind slightly with our coursework, we are still able to do some planning but without a song ideas will be lacking. It also means that extra posts have to added explaining that we now have to use another artist and the emails that we sent and received.

Our Group

Myself

Louise Vann

Hayley Skinsley

Paul Willis

We each have our own important role within the group. I am the editor, when I receive the footage it will be my job to edit it by cutting down some scenes, making sure everything fits together and runs smoothly. I will also have to add transitions and other different effects as well as making sure that the li synching matches up with the song.

Louise is our cinematographer, this means that she will shoot all the footage we will need in order to create our music video.
Hayley is our actress as well as our idea maker, like last year Hayley thinks of initial ideas that we can use for a project and we then discuss them together as a group.
Paul's role within the group is to make sure that we work as a team, give suggestions to the rest of the group when he thinks something can be improved and to also take over the role of anyone who is not in or unavailable, with the exception of Hayley.

Copyright

For our coursework we had to find music by unsigned artists. Copyright is a set of exclusive rights that are granted to the author or creator of an original work, which includes the right to copy, distribute and adapt the work. Therefore had we decided to use a copyrighted song we would have had to get the artists permission, in most cases this would have taken therefore it's easier to use a non copyrighted song.
Some friends from another school who also do media decided to use a copyrighted song by a popular band, but never got a reply back so had to find alternative music to use.

C4 Greatest Music Videos Part 5

23. TLC- Waterfalls (1995)

This video is mainly about gang violence and unsafe sex. This video also uses computer generated effects.

23. Britney Spears- Baby One More Time (1999)

This song is about a teenage girl having a crush on a guy. When watching this video it did become apparent that this video was bordering on soft porn.

22. Justin Timberlake- Cry Me A River (2003)

This video shows Justin stalking a girl who many people believed was meant to be Britney Spears, although Justin still denies that the girl was meant to represent Britney.

14. Christina Aguilera- Dirty (2002)

This video was really a re-invention of the old Christina from the Mickey Mouse club to a sexy young woman who could do what she wanted.

5. Madonna- Like A Prayer (1989)

This video was very controversial due to the story line where Madonna witnesses the murder of a white girl by three white men. A black man tries to help and save her but he is arrested for her murder and it is up to Madonna as to whether she should save this man's life or listen to the criminal's threat.
The black man appears in the video as what many people assumed to be Jesus, when he was actually meant to be Saint Martin de Porres. The video also showed religious and sexual ecstasy.

Preliminary Exercise: Lip Synching

For our preliminary exercise we will have to film us lip synching to a piece of music, this will help us when creating our own music video. Once we have finished filming we will need to upload the video an edit it in Final Cut Express, as we are new to this program the preliminary exercise will also be used to help us get used to using the program.

We have already begun filming our preliminary exercise, and as the editor it is my job to go back to the editing suite in my spare time to edit and upload the exercise, before the end of next week.
The song we will be using for our preliminary exercise is I Won't Forget You by Black Diamond Bay.

Wendy Bennett "Oh Me Oh My" Lyrics

Don't wanna make a show, or cause a scene,
but your the best thing I've ever seen.

Ooooh... Oh me oh my.

You better get us down to that foreign town,
shake it up and spin me round.
Ooooh... Oh me oh my.

You know I know... That your no good,
And I always been misunderstood.
Gonna tread up trouble onto the floor,
and a goodbye note to my front door.
Ooooh.. Oh me oh my.

You know I know, your not for real,
but I just love this way that your making me feel.
So make it love and make it mean,
baby your the king I wanna be the queen.
Ooooh... Oh me oh my...
Ooooh... Oh me oh my...

C4 100 Greatest Music Videos: Part 4

42. Bjork- It's Oh So Quiet
This music video like Praise You was made by Spike Jonze and is a celebration of old fashioned musicals. For the slower tempo part of the songs, the video runs in slow motion and returns to normal speed for the up tempo sections of the songs.

41. Spice Girls- Wannabe
This music video shows The Spice Girl's gate crashing a party and being rebels. This video was used to introduce The Spice Girl's as a group and also as individuals to show their personality.

35. Sinead O'Connor- Nothing Compares (1990)
This video is mostly made up of close up shot's of Sinead O'Connor's face, and because this type of shot was used Sinead had to underplay her performance. The tears from the line "All the flowers that you planted mamma" were real as her mum had not long passed away.

31. Eminem- Stan
This song is a story about an obsessed Eminem fan, who realizes that he isn't the hero he imagined he would be. The song also sample's Dido's song Thank You, Dido is also in the video and plays Stan's pregnant girlfriend.

29. Electric Six- Gay Bar
The video depicts a number of Abraham Lincoln look-a-likes in the Whitehouse. The video was made to get noticed, was comical and just shy of being offensive. The video contains many sexual references, and Abraham Lincoln is used because of the controversy surrounding his sexuality.
Published with Blogger-droid v1.6.8

Fatboy Slim- Praise You (1999)

This video shows the fictional dance group Torrance Community Dance Group dancing in front of a cinema, led by their leader Spike Jonze. The video was filmed outside the cinema without the owners permission and it was unknown to the people outside the cinema that they were filming a music video. The video was filmed by five people within the crowd pretending to be tourists.

Planning Outline "Oh Me Oh My"

For location we have been thinking about using various locations including a bar, bedroom and a field. For the props we would need to use a guitar, as this can clearly be heard when listening to the song. It would also be good to use a guitar as this song has a Country and Western theme to it.
For costume and make-up we will need to make sure that they match the theme of the song and for actors and actresses, we have planned to use Hayley as our singer and possibly get a group of our friends together to show the light and happy side to the song.

Bob Dylan- Subterranean Homesick Blues (1965)

This video was made by writing some of the words from the song onto cards, and then throwing them away when the word had been said. The video was planned the night before and was made in one day- the length of the song. You can see that Bob Dylan isn't always in frame and some of the timing is off.
Number 68 on Channel 4's 100 Greatest Music Videos.

The main reason this video is so popular is because of the many copies, remakes and parodies that were made after the video was released. Below is an example of this with an advert for misheard lyrics and Maxwell tapes.

C4 100 Greatest Music Videos: Part 3

78. Godley & Creme- Cry (1977)
This video was made up of Godley and Crème and other morphing faces singing the song, to make the effect look seamless different halves of people’s faces were mixed together.

69. Frankie Goes To Hollywood- Two Tribes (1984)
This video was filmed by Godley and Creme. The song's title comes from the line "when two great warrior tribes go to war", from the film Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. The single was released at the height of the Cold War, the video depicted a wrestling match between the then President Ronald Reagan and then Soviet leader Konstantin Chernenko.

57. Meat Loaf- I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That) (1993)
This video retold an old love story of Beauty and The Beast, with Meat Loaf playing the hideous monster.

47. The Prodigy- Firestarter (1996)
It was suggested that the vocalist Keith Flint needed medical attention due to his erratic movements.

49. Jamiroquai- Virtual Insanity (1996)
This video is very popular and has managed to fool people for a number of years, as the floor appeared to be moving while the room remained still. The effect by moving the walls of the set on a stationary floor, the furniture in the room was attached to the walls and was released when the walls were moved, further helping to create the look of a moving floor.

Music Confirmation

For the past few weeks we have been looking for a song to use for our music video using sites such as http://www.unsigned.com/ and http://www.myspace.com/.

We have finally found a song that are interested in called 'Oh Me Oh My' by Wendy A Bennett and via Hayley Skinsley's myspace account we contacted Wendy asking for her permission to use her song.

A couple of days later we received a reply from Wendy on myspace.

Survey Results

We sent our survey out to 51 people and when everyone had completed the survey, Louise used the results to make some graphs to show the results of the survey.

One of the questions we asked was "How old are you?" From the survey results we can see that the majority of the people who the survey were aged between 13-18 years.

Another question we asked was "Do you watch music video's often". Like the previous question there was a clear difference between those who do and those who don't, with 45 people answering yeas and 9 people no.

Another question we asked people was "Why do you watch music videos". The most popular reason that people picked was because of the actual song itself or if they liked the video that went with the song. The second popular answer was because they were fans of the artist and the third most popular being because a friend recommended the video to them.

The final question that we asked was "Why is a music video important for a song". 32 people choose the answer entertainment, 21 people choose the answer that it helps understand the song and finally 15 people said that publicity was important for a song.

C4 100 Greatest Music Videos: Part 2

100. Musical Youth- Pass The Dutchie (1982)

This song is a cover version of the song Pass The Koutchie by the Mighty Diamonds which dealt with the use of cannabis. The word Koutchie was replaced with Dutchie and all drug references were removed. The video was know about a school inspector trying to get the kids back into school, where they end up in court and are found guilty.

98. Bronski Beat- Small Town Boy (1984)
This video tells the story of a young gay man who comes to London and what happens to him while he's there. the song was based on the singers own experiences and about the frustration of people not knowing your gay and not being able to be themselves.

96. So Solid- 21 Seconds (1998)
This group is made up of about 30 young black people, because of this they were often perceived as dangerous. The song gave some of them the chance to tell people their stories.

87. Talking Heads- Once In A Lifetime (1981)

This is a very unusual video beginning with the singers movement, it was very unusual for singer's to have a lot of movement in their videos. His movements were abstract and were based on mentally ill people. The song was about not being in control of you life and he was the puppet.
