My Chemical Romance - The Ghost Of You (Video)

One of my favorite music videos is My Chemical Romance's The Ghost Of You. The song deals with the fears of loss and was filmed as a movie. This is one of my music videos as it closely resembles a scene from my favorite film- Omaha invasion in Saving Private Ryan. Some of the video takes place at a United Services Organization dance and the rest depicts a D-Day scene where the band members play US soldiers in combat.

Below you can see the opening scene from Saving Private Ryan for comparison.

Music Video: Introduction

Music videos have a number of purposes which all add up to one main purpose, which is to advertise and market an artist and their music.

  • Music video's raise awareness about a group or artists profile
  • Tells a story and often paints a picture in the audience's head of what the song is about, though this isn't always so, as some songs have videos that have nothing to do with the song.
  • Promotes, advertises, markets an artist or group with the intention to persuade an audience to buy their album or tickets to their show.
  • They appeal to visual audiences.
  • Used for product placement- where we see shots of products the artist owns or has made eg. Christina Aguilera- Not Myself Tonight where there is a shot of her perfume

What Makes A Video Successful?

  • Word of mouth- people tell their friends about a song they have heard and get them to listen to it.
  • Youtube hits/views- the bigger the number the more successful the song.
  • Publicity- whether it be good or bad publicity can enhance the popularity of a music video.
  • Charts and illegal downloads are other ways that the success of a music video can be measured.

Survey Monkey: Research (Audience Feedback)

A survey was created by Louise on survey monkey which she is going to distribute to 50 friends via the social networking site Facebook. The survey will be used to find out why and how often people watch music videos, this will help us to create our music video as we will have a better understanding and idea about what people like about music videos.

Below you can see what our survey looks like.
